Title: The Next Major Access-Control Opportunity May Already Be Installed.
A recent article by Robert Mancuso of iLOQ, “Why Access Modernization Will Happen on Existing Doors,”
makes an important point: millions of existing doors need to be modernized, but building owners cannot always
justify extensive construction, new wiring, prolonged disruption, or complete system replacement. And, there
is the cost.
The article describes an important shift toward modernizing existing doors while preserving useful
infrastructure. We agree—and believe that modernization should extend beyond the physical door to the
architecture behind it.
For FaceKey, modernization means providing a practical path from legacy, panel-centric access control to
reader-centric architecture. That transition can occur gradually or as a complete upgrade, depending on the
facility, its existing system, and its security requirements.
The Issue: Many facilities already have panel-centric electronic access-control systems. Their doors,
locks, wiring, panels, and management software may still provide value. However, the customer may need
stronger identity verification, better credential management, and a more flexible architecture.
